  19.         User-supported software is an experiment in distributing
  20.         computer programs, based on three principles:
  21.  
  22.         First, that the value and utility of software is best assessed by
  23.         the user on his/her own system.  Only after using a program can
  24.         one really determine whether it serves personal applications,
  25.         needs, and tastes.
  26.  
  27.         Second, that the creation of independent personal computer 
  28.         software can and should be supported by the computing community.
  29.  
  30.         Finally, that copying of programs should be encouraged,
  31.         rather than restricted. The ease with which software can be
  32.         distributed outside traditional commercial channels reflects the
  33.         strength, rather than the weakness, of electronic information.

  38.         Anyone may request a copy of a user-supported program by sending
  39.         a blank, formatted disk to the program author together with an
  40.         addressed, postage-paid return mailer. A copy of the program,

  44.         program. Making a contribution is voluntary on the part of the user.

  68.  
  69.         Up to now, distribution of software has relied either on 
  70.         restricting access (and charging for the cost of doing so), or 
  71.         anonymously casting programs into the public domain.  The user-
  72.         supported concept is a way for the computing community to support 
  73.         and encourage creative work outside the traditional marketplace.

  75.         This is an experiment in economics more than altruism. Free 
  76.         distribution of software and voluntary payment for its use 
  77.         eliminates the need for money to be spent on marketing, 
  78.         advertising, and copy protection schemes. Users can obtain 
  79.         quality software at reduced cost, while still supporting program 
  80.         authors.  And the most useful programs survive, based purely on 
  81.         their usefulness.

  107.         This program was originally published and sold by a name publisher 
  108.         for $99.  However, due to a merger acquisition, the surviving 
  109.         publisher declined to properly market the program.

  135.         Congratulations on obtaining TekStock to assist you in preparing 
  136.         stock price charts and analyzing stock price history and trends.  
  137.         TekStock is easy to use with versatility that allows you to enter 
  138.         and update stock quotes from your local newspaper, the Dow Jones 
  139.         News/Retrieval, Warner Computer Systems, or the CompuServe 
  140.         Information System.
  141.  
  142.         Dow Jones, Warner and CompuServe are widely used on-line reference 
  143.         databases.  They provide a wide range of services, including a stock 
  144.         quote reference data base, which you can use with TekStock.  They 
  145.         can provide you with the latest stock quote information as well as 
  146.         historical stock quotes of stocks over a period of time specified 
  147.         by you.
  148.  
  149.         You access these databases by using a modem and dialing a special 
  150.         code.  Information on subscribing to these services is included here.

  153.     Overview Of The Program
  154.  
  155.         TekStock produces high resolution stock price charts that can be 
  156.         displayed on the screen or quickly reproduced on paper using popular 
  157.         printers capable of bit graphics.  TekStock produces charts showing 
  158.         daily highs, lows and closings with volume activities.  Technical 
  159.         analysis is also included providing moving averages, volume 
  160.         indicators, relative strength, and oscillators.  The charts are 
  161.         neatly labeled and ruled for viewing ease.
  162.  
  163.         TekStock can easily be used with more than one data diskette when 
  164.         your files become large enough for multidisk storage.  A hard disk 
  165.         is also supported, including DOS sub-directories.
  166.  
  167.         The user manual will introduce you to the programs for entering data 
  168.         manually, producing charts, downloading quotes from CompuServe, 
  169.         Warner or Dow Jones, and updating your files using downloaded data.  
  170.         How to use moving averages, indicators and oscillators is covered in 
  171.         the user manual tutorials on Technical Analysis.  TekStock is capable 
  172.         of integrating stock split adjustments or stock dividends into the 
  173.         files.  This can be done either by ratios or percentages and TekStock 
  174.         will automatically update the stock quotes previous to the stock 
  175.         split or stock dividend date.

  177.         TekStock can also be used with other compatible application programs. 
  178.         The tutorials on Exporting Files will instruct you how to store data 
  179.         to a disk for use with typical spreadsheet programs.  A special 
  180.         tutorial on downloading stock price data is included in the manual.

  199.     Program Capabilities
  200.  
  201.         By using different data disks and/or sub-directories, you can store 
  202.         quotes for an unlimited number of stocks.  Each data disk or 
  203.         directory may store up to 52 stocks.  Each disk or directory 
  204.         containing stocks is referred to as a portfolio.  Up to 550 days 
  205.         of quote data can be stored for a stock (called a stock quote file).  
  206.         That is equal to more than two full years of trading days.
  207.  
  208.         Quote data is limited to the following: volume (in hundreds) less 
  209.         than 9,999,999; high, low and close prices should be less than 
  210.         9,999,999 and greater than zero.  Prices can be manually entered 
  211.         as fractions (i.e. 20 7/8) or decimals (75.25).  A fraction will 
  212.         be converted to a decimal by the program.
  213.  
  214.         Stock chart displays are scaled using the maximum high and low 
  215.         quotes.  This feature provides the greatest detail possible within 
  216.         the limits of the screen boundaries.  Volume indicators, oscillators, 
  217.         and moving averages are also scaled.  Both axes of the stock chart 
  218.         are labeled.

  221.     What You Will Need
  222.  
  223.         1. An IBM PC, PC/XT, or compatible computer with a minimum of 
  224.            192K RAM.
  225.  
  226.         2. At least one disk drive.  A second floppy or fixed disk drive 
  227.            is supported on the PC version.
  228.  
  229.         3. DOS operating system: 2.00 or better for the PC version.  
  230.            Sub-directories are supported.
  231.  
  232.         4. A least one blank, formatted diskette for your data on systems 
  233.            without a hard disk.
  234.  
  235.         5. An IBM Graphics Adaptor, or equivalent; an RGB monitor or 
  236.            equivalent.
  237.  
  238.         OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT:
  239.  
  240.         In order to download quotes or print charts, the following equipment 
  241.         is necessary:
  242.  
  243.         1. An IBM parallel printer port adapter, attachment, or equivalent.  
  244.            This is needed if you intend to print reports and charts.
  245.  
  246.         2. A parallel interface printer.  The following printers are fully 
  247.            supported for printing the stock charts: C. Itoh 8510 (ProWriter), 
  248.            NEC 8023, IBM Graphics Printer, Epson MX/RX series with graphics 
  249.            option, Epson FX series, Okidata with Plug-n-Play, and other 
  250.            equivalent printers.

  266.            stock charts: Epson JX.

  268.            Important Note: Other printers may be used, but may not be 
  269.            capable of printing the stock charts.

  271.         3. An IBM Asynchronous Serial Port, or equivalent, for modem 
  272.            communication with on-line databases.
  273.  
  274.         4. A telephone modem (300 or 1200 bps), stand alone or internal.
  275.  
  276.         Additionally, if you wish to download stock price data, you will 
  277.         need to have an account number and password for CompuServe, Warner 
  278.         or Dow Jones.
  279.  
  280.         TekStock uses line printer port #1 for printed reports and charts, 
  281.         and can use serial ports #1 and #2 for modem communications.
  282.

  284.     Getting Started
  285.  
  286.         Two disks are required to run TekStock: the Program disk, and a 
  287.         blank floppy disk or hard disk to be used as a data disk.  This 
  288.         data disk is used to save the stock quote data you enter into 
  289.         TekStock.  The data disk must be formatted (so it can be read by 
  290.         the program) before data can be stored on it.

  292.         You always load the Program disk into the computer using disk 
  293.         Drive A.  TekStock checks to see that the proper disk is in the 
  294.         drive before it performs a disk operation.  With two disk drives, 
  295.         the data disk goes into Drive B or uses Hard Disk Drive C.  
  296.         Operating the program with one drive involves swapping the program 
  297.         disk with the data disk.  If you forget to do this, the screen will 
  298.         display a message asking you to put the correct disk into the drive.

  301.     Make Working Copies of TekStock
  302.  
  303.         For the next few minutes you will use DOS to format diskettes and 
  304.         copy files.
  305.  
  306.       Floppy Disk
  307.  
  308.         1. First, format a diskette for TekStock.  With your DOS diskette 
  309.            in Drive A,
  310.            ENTER: format b:/s
  311.            PRESS [RETURN]
  312.  
  313.            The /s command will copy enough DOS to let you "boot" your 
  314.            computer with the TekStock diskette.
  315.  
  316.         2. Insert a blank diskette into Drive B.  Single floppy system 
  317.            users will be prompted to swap diskettes.

  352.        10. Now you'll copy the TekStock program.  Remove the DOS diskette 
  353.            from Drive A and insert the original TekStock program disk into 
  354.            Drive A.

  356.        11. If you have two floppy drives, insert the diskette labeled 
  357.            "TekStock / Working Copy" into Drive B.  If you have a single 
  358.            drive, wait until you are prompted to swap diskettes in your drive.

  360.        12. ENTER: copy a:*.* b:
  361.            PRESS [RETURN]
  362.  
  363.        13. It will take a few minutes to copy all of the files.  Wait until 
  364.            the DOS prompt > reappears before continuing.
  365.  
  366.        14. Remove the diskettes from the drives.  Store the original 
  367.            TekStock diskette in a safe place.

  370.  
  371.         1. First, make a directory for the TekStock programs and data files.
  372.            ENTER: md tekstock

  375.         2. Now change the directory and copy the TekStock programs to the disk.

  379.         3. Insert the TekStock program diskette into Drive A.

  397.     The Batch File
  398.  
  399.         Every time your computer starts up (boots), it attempts to load 
  400.         the DOS operating system from the diskette in Drive A (or C on hard 
  401.         disk systems).
  402.  
  403.         The TEKSTK.BAT file (supplied) must be used to automatically start 
  404.         TekStock.  This batch file automatically loads and runs the printer 
  405.         driver program, TEKGRAPH.COM.
  406.  
  407.         TEKGRAPH.COM handles the printing of the charts.  It must be run 
  408.         before TekStock so that the printing of the charts will perform 
  409.         properly.  Attempts to substitute GRAPHICS.COM or other print 
  410.         drivers will not produce TekStock's expanded size charts (but may 
  411.         work to same degree).
  412.  
  413.         The batch file, TEKSTK.BAT, loads and runs the printer driver and 
  414.         then starts TekStock.
  415.  
  416.         If you wish to have an AUTOEXEC.BAT file, copy the TEKSTK.BAT file 
  417.         to a file named AUTOEXEC.BAT.  An AUTOEXEC.BAT file will 
  418.         automatically start TekStock when you "boot" your computer.

  420.     Starting TekStock
  421.  
  422.       IBM PC With Floppy Drives
  423.  
  424.         1. Insert the TekStock "working copy" program diskette into Drive A.
  425.  
  426.         2. Insert the data diskette into Drive B.
  427.  
  428.         3. Switch on your machine and enter the date and time when requested.

  440.     Creating A Portfolio
  441.  
  442.         If this is your first run of TekStock, you will have to create a 
  443.         portfolio file to contain your stock quote data.
  444.  
  445.         The program takes about a minute to load.  After the load is 
  446.         completed, the program will display the following message at the 
  447.         bottom of the screen:

  463.         Important Note: Users with a single drive should replace the 
  464.         TekStock program disk with their data disk when prompted by 
  465.         the system.

  467.         Since this is the very first use of TekStock, there is no 
  468.         Portfolio File; so one needs to be created.

  471.         The program will prompt for your choice to create a new portfolio 
  472.         or to specify a DOS sub-directory.

  474.         Those with floppy disks should:
  475.  
  476.         1. PRESS [2] - Create

  478.         Those with hard disk should specify the TekStock sub-directory for 
  479.         their quote data.  To do this:

  483.         2. The program then displays:

  493.         Your screen should display the Main Menu.
  494.  
  495.         Study the Main Menu screen.  You will see that there are six menu 
  496.         options.  Each option refers to a specific function available from 
  497.         TekStock.
  498.  
  499.         The first option, 1-Communications is selected if you want to start 
  500.         the on-line communications program, obtain stock quotes from Dow 
  501.         Jones, Warner, or CompuServe and save them to the data disk.
  502.  
  503.         The second option, 2-Quote Maintenance is used to update your stock 
  504.         quote data from the keyboard, or from a quote file downloaded from 
  505.         CompuServe, Warner or Dow Jones.  This option is also used to delete 
  506.         stock quote data from your portfolio, list stock quote data, or list 
  507.         the stocks in your portfolio.

  509.         The third option, 3-Charting is used to display a graph of a stock 
  510.         for use in analyzing the trends.
  511.  
  512.         The fourth option, 4-Utility Menu is used to select the Utility 
  513.         program functions such as exporting files and adjusting for stock 
  514.         splits.

  529.         The fifth option, 5-Configuration is used to configure, or set up, 
  530.         TekStock for the type of printer you have, your choice of screen 
  531.         colors, your passwords and your modem parameters.
  532.  
  533.         The sixth option, 9-End is used to quit TekStock and return to 
  534.         the A> prompt of the operating system.

  537.     Configuration
  538.  
  539.         Configuration to set up or configure TekStock for your computer.
  540.  
  541.         The Configuration Menu has several options.  The first option, 
  542.         Modem Parameters allows you to set up TekStock for your modem 
  543.         dialing commands, baud rate and communications port.
  544.  
  545.       Modem Parameters
  546.  
  547.         Consult your modem manual, or computer manual if you are unsure 
  548.         about any of the settings.
  549.  
  550.         Modem parameters can be set by advancing the cursor with the 
  551.         [RETURN] or the up/down arrow keys to the parameter to be changed.  
  552.         Then press the [DEL] key to erase the previous entry, enter the new 
  553.         parameter, and press [RETURN].
  554.  
  555.         For Hayes modems and compatibles, you may not need to change any 
  556.         modem parameters.  TekStock is shipped with modem parameters preset 
  557.         for a Hayes, 300 bps modem, using the COM1: port.
  558.  
  559.         Other modems may require command codes less than 32 decimal.  
  560.         Command codes less than 32; except backspace (8), carriage 
  561.         return (13) and escape (27); must be entered by pressing a 
  562.         control key combination or using the Alt-numeric-keypad method.  
  563.         Command codes less than 32 are displayed as highlighted letters.  
  564.         For example, the command code Ctrl-N is entered by pressing 
  565.         [CTRL]-[N] and is displayed as a highlighted "N".  These codes 
  566.         can be entered for the Dial Command, Modem Initialize and Carrier 
  567.         Prompt parameters.

  569.         Other modems may require a carriage return (13) within a command 
  570.         string.  You can use the carriage return substitution character, "}", 
  571.         the right brace.  This character will be converted to a carriage 
  572.         return when it is sent to the modem.  A carriage return will be 
  573.         sent at the end of the command string automatically.
  574.  
  575.         Verify that your Hayes modem configuration switches are set properly.
  576.         Other modems may have similar switch settings.  Consult your modem 
  577.         manual.  Hayes switches should be set as indicated below 
  578.         (factory settings):

  608.         The Baud Rate parameter should be set to either 300 or 1200, 
  609.         depending upon your modem type.
  610.         PRESS [DEL] to erase the previous entry, and,
  611.         ENTER: 300 or 1200
  612.         PRESS [RETURN]

  614.         The Communications Port is preset for the computer to use the COM1: 
  615.         serial port.  If your modem is attached to, or uses, the COM2: port, 
  616.         then enter the value "2".  Use the same procedure as for the 
  617.         Baud Rate.
  618.  
  619.         The Modem Initialize parameter does not need to be entered for 
  620.         Hayes modems.  If your modem requires an initialization command, 
  621.         enter the appropriate command here.  The initialize command is sent 
  622.         to the modem before any other commands.

  624.         Move the cursor to the Dial Command by pressing the [RETURN] key.
  625.  
  626.         The Dial Command is preset for Hayes modems attached to touch-tone 
  627.         telephone lines.  Remember, all Hayes commands must be entered using 
  628.         capital letters.  Consult your modem manual and enter your modem's 
  629.         Dial Command.  The telephone numbers to be dialed will be entered 
  630.         later.

  632.         The Carrier Prompt is the response your modem makes when it has 
  633.         detected a carrier and completed the telephone connection with the 
  634.         remote computer.  When the Carrier Prompt is received, TekStock will 
  635.         continue, otherwise, TekStock will terminate the connection after 
  636.         set period of time.

  638.         For Hayes modems, the verbose Carrier Prompt, "CONNECT", is sent to 
  639.         your computer when this occurs.  Consult your modem manual and make 
  640.         the required changes.  Remember, the computer treats lower and upper 
  641.         case letters as being different (i.e., "CONNECT" is not equal to 
  642.         "connect").

  644.         You can exit the parameter screen at any time:

  647.         Exiting the parameter screen, the program checks the validity of 
  648.         your entries and displays an error message for any errors detected.

  661.         After pressing [ESC], you will be asked whether the parameters are 
  662.         okay.
  663.         PRESS [RETURN] or [Y] to effect the changes.

  665.         Pressing [N]-No will leave the parameters unchanged and display the 
  666.         Configuration Menu.

  668.         You will want to enter the telephone numbers, networks and passwords 
  669.         you use to access CompuServe (CIS), Dow Jones (DJNR), and Warner (WCS).
  670.         You can use any one or all services.
  671.  
  672.         From the Configuration Menu, choose a service by pressing the

  697.         Option Six, Disk/Directory, allows you to preselect which drive-id

  701.         to the procedure discussed in Loading The Program.

  705.         Option Seven, Screen Colors, allows you to change the screen colors 
  706.         used by TekStock.  Changing screen colors follows a procedure similar

  709.         The foreground, background and highlight parameters affect menu 
  710.         screen and other prompting displays.  The palette and palette 
  711.         intensity parameters affect the stock chart displays.

  729.         After configuring TekStock, you can save the selected parameters to 
  730.         disk.  This allows TekStock to recall your selected parameters each 
  731.         time it is started.  The parameters are saved by selecting option 
  732.         Eight, Save Configuration.

  734.         If you do not choose to save the parameters you have just changed, 
  735.         the program will default to the previous parameter settings the next 
  736.         time you start TekStock.

  738.         Parameters are saved in a file named CONFIG.FIL on the TekStock 
  739.         program disk in Drive A.  Parameters can be reset to the originally 
  740.         shipped values by erasing CONFIG.FIL and re-booting TekStock.

  744.         Three on-line stock quote services were chosen for use with TekStock: 
  745.         CompuServe Information Service, Dow Jones News/Retrieval, and Warner 
  746.         Computer Systems.  These services were chosen for their wide 
  747.         availability, ease of use, and low costs.

  749.         In order to use any of these services, you must become a subscriber 
  750.         and obtain a password/account number.  Each service offers new users 
  751.         a starter kit.  Some starter kits may be available at computer 
  752.         stores.  If you are unable to obtain a starter kit locally, you
